Auxiliary Work

I first learned about the concept of auxiliary work 15 years ago doing personal training.

I was hired to help a semi professional runner avoid injury.

The auxiliary work in this case was maintaining and strengthening a kinetic chain muscle firing pattern.

Auxiliary of course means to supplement but after working with many runners I quickly started to realise something.

Those who didn’t do the auxiliary work got injured and couldn’t do the planned event.

Those who only did the auxiliary work and didn’t get out to do the practise were still able to compete.

Albeit not as well as if they had practised but they competed and rarely picked up injury from having done so. 

Rather than seeing auxiliary as supplemental I have come to see it as the most essential ingredient. 

I now ask, what auxiliary work needs to be done to make this...

Meeting, conversation, interview, workout, diet, relationship, event, day, week, year, sleep, experience, job,

Go to well. 

The auxiliary is the work that facilities achieving the best possible outcome given the available resources.
